Find your National Insurance number

You can find your National Insurance number:

  • on a document you already have, for example a P60, payslip or letters about benefits
  • in your personal tax account if you already have one
  • in the聽HMRC听补辫辫 if you live in the UK
  • in your Apple or Google Wallet if you鈥檝e previously saved it there

You can also use your personal tax account or HMRC app to download a letter that shows your National Insurance number.

Your National Insurance number is made up of 2 letters, 6 numbers and a final letter, for example, QQ123456B.

Find your National Insurance number online

You can use this service if you:

  • need to find your National Insurance number
  • know your number, but need it on a letter

You鈥檒l need to sign in to use this service. If you do not already have sign in details, you鈥檒l be able to create them.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will not tell you your National Insurance number over the phone or on webchat.

If you can prove your identity

You鈥檒l be able to view your National Insurance number online if you can prove your identity, for example using a passport or driving licence.

If you cannot prove your identity

You can still use this service, but you will not be able to view your National Insurance number online. It will be posted to the address that HMRC has on record for you. This can take up to 10 working days to arrive.

If you live abroad

You cannot use this service if you live abroad. You鈥檒l need to contact HMRC to get a letter confirming your National Insurance number. This can take up to 21 working days to arrive.

Other ways to get your National Insurance number

If you cannot find your National Insurance number on any of your documents or by using the online service, you can:

  • contact HMRC to get a letter confirming your National Insurance number - this can take up to 10 working days to arrive if you live in the UK or 21 working days if you live abroad
  • , print and post it to the address given at the end of the form. You cannot save a partly completed form, you鈥檒l need to complete it in one session.
