The College of Experts at the Department for Transport (DfT) works to:听

• increase the department鈥檚 access to scientific networks
• develop and maintain relationships with experts听
• broaden DfT鈥檚 evidence base听
• identify important areas of research interest听听
• support the provision of scientific advice听

Members of the college were selected to provide expertise throughout all policy work across the department and give external expertise to transport sectors.

Specific activities of the college include:听听

• participating in working groups based on specific themes that feed into the department鈥檚 areas of research interest听
• providing ad hoc advice and support to policy and analytical colleagues听
• supporting DfT鈥檚 Chief Scientific Adviser team by offering expert/scientific networks that can help guide and shape policy

The college is made up of 45 external experts from across academia and industry and is managed by the DFT Chief Scientific Adviser team. This team is led by the Chief Scientific Adviser for DFT, Professor Sarah Sharples.
