British Ambassador visits Quetzaltenango
The British Ambassador to Guatemala, Carolyn Davidson, travelled to Quetzaltenango on September 6-7 to promote collaboration on priority UK policy goals.

The visit had a particular focus on engaging with the many students in Quetzaltenango, to highlight the UK Government鈥檚 Scholarship programme, Chevening. At an event held at 鈥淐asa Noj鈥�, more than 80 people explored the opportunities Chevening could offer and heard directly from ex-scholars from western Guatemala about their experiences in the UK and its impact on their lives.
Additionally, the Ambassador participated in the inauguration of the International Fair 鈥淴ela Fair 2018鈥� and toured the stands in the company of Quetzaltenango鈥檚 Mayor, Luis Grijalva. Both discussed the economic opportunities and challenges in Quetzaltenango and possibilities for more British engagement in an economy where education plays a major role.
The Ambassador also visited the local offices of the Prosecutor General and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) to express the United Kingdom鈥檚 support for its work in the country and regional efforts to fight corruption. Last week the FCO鈥檚 Minister of State, Alan Duncan, issued a statement on CICIG.
Finally, the Ambassador spent time with a British organisation, Health Poverty Action, learning more about their work in Quetzaltenango and Totonicapan to fight poverty and improve the lives of women and children.
