Julia Sutherland

Biography

Julia is Deputy Ambassador at the British Embassy in Tirana.

She joined the Diplomatic Service in 1995, after receiving a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at Cambridge University. Her first posting abroad was to the British Embassy in Beijing, where she worked in the Commercial section.  Her other roles overseas were at the High Commission in Singapore and, from 2012 to 2016, Deputy High Commissioner to Jamaica. 

While based in the UK, Julia’s assignments have included work on EU enlargement and on China issues,  a stint as Private Secretary to the Minister for Trade, and a role in National Security Directorate, focussed on counterterrorism. She has also spent time on secondment to the Home Office, where she worked on Immigration issues.

Deputy Head of Mission, Albania

The Deputy Head of Mission is a senior diplomat and typically a key advisor to the Ambassador or High Commissioner. The Deputy is responsible for the daily management of an overseas Embassy or High Commission. They will represent the UK’s interests in the absence of the Ambassador as Chargé d’Affaires. A senior ranking Deputy may also take the title Minister. Smaller missions may not have a Deputy Head.
