Accredited official statistics status

Accredited official statistics status means that our statistics meet the highest standards of trustworthiness, quality and public value, and it is our responsibility to maintain compliance with these standards.

The designation of free flow speed statistics as accredited official statistics was confirmed in following a against the by the Office for Statistics Regulation.

Changes to these statistics

Since the latest review by the Office for Statistics Regulation, we have continued to comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics, and have improved these statistics by:

  • reviewing the counting sites used in the publication and as a result created new timeseries analysis on speed limit exceedances and average speed
  • including contextual commentary by including data from the Home Office, Ministry of Justice, RAC Foundation and the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme
  • adding further analyses including headway between vehicles and speed limit exceedances on weekdays and weekends
  • including additional vehicle and road classes

To better reflect the content following these changes, the series was renamed from ‘Free flow speed statistics’ to ‘Speed compliance statistics’ with the 2016 edition.
