Details

Passenger journey figures are based on data collected from a panel survey of the largest bus operators and are seasonally adjusted. The bus fares index is compiled from data provided by a representative sample of operators.

Main results

Passenger journeys

In the year to March 2014:

  • an estimated 4.67 billion bus passenger journeys were made in England, around 70 million more than during the previous year
  • bus use in London increased by 2.7% while outside London bus use was broadly unchanged, increasing 0.3% compared to the year to March 2013

Comparing January to March 2014 with January to March 2013:

  • there was a 2.7% increase in bus passenger journeys in England with a 5.1% increase in London and a 0.4% increase outside London
  • bus passenger journeys increased by 2.8% in Scotland and increased by 1.3% in Wales over the same period

Bus Fares Index

Comparing March 2014 with March 2013:

  • there was an increase in bus fares of 3.1% in England (3.1% in London, 2.5% in metropolitan areas and 3.4% in non metropolitan areas). The all items retail prices index increased by 2.5% over this period
  • over the same period there was an increase of 3.2% in fares in Scotland and 1.6% in Wales
