Dairy Development Programs: Benefits and Risks for Smallholders - The Case of Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract

This two-page policy briefing is based on , Garcia et al., 2006. It reviews the current status of the dairy industry in Andhra Pradesh, India and assesses the likely impacts of development in that sector. Since resource-poor farmers are risk avoiders by nature, the briefing notes that the risk profile of farms targeted by a development profile must be improved at the same time as economic improvements. Dairy development programs, working in partnership, can effectively lift small dairy producers out of poverty through a competitive dairy farming business.
